The "Campus Virtual" department of the UNI has been contributing electronic media to UNI's educational processes for the last several years. Since 2002, efforts have been made to install and operate an online e-learning platform. dotLRN has been chosen this year and installed and configured in August 2003.
UNI plans to offer free and fee based courses to the general public, and to use the dotLRN platform as the major instrument for online learning at the university.
UNI counts with six faculties:
Several centers and departments offer Masters programs, they include: the Center for (environmental) Clean Production, the Project of atention to the (small, middle and large) industry, etc.
More than 10.000 students are educated by about 500 teachers at UNI.
Also this year, an institutional ICT program - TIC/UNI/ASDI has been started. Starting this year, and for the next three, the program will significantly improve the network infrastructure (equipment, etc) at UNI's both campuses, and provide broad access of students and teachers to the Intra- and Internet.
The staff supporting this dotLRN@UNI innitiative includes Ing. Lyudmila Montoya (mailto:lmontoya@fec.uni.edu.ni), responsible for contents, pedagogical issues and design, and Georg Lehner responsible for tecnological consultancy, system administration and programming. Georg has provided all the information for this case study
We are using GNU/Debian-Linux and PostgreSQL, as well as an August 2003 CVS HEAD version of Aolserver, openACS and dotLRN for our platform.
